Water quality statments W.S. reality
There are WHO recommendations, EU and national regulation for drinking water safety legislation, which deal with chemical components, permissible limit values (e.g. arsenic, nitrate, lead content) and organic and inorganic contamination parameters. Accredited laboratories carry out targeted testing for the organic and inorganic impurities mentioned and issue certificates of conformity for drinking water.
The problem is that water quality tests are always made by the waterworks and utility providers at their place and not in the consumer’s home, but there is a risky long journey of the water between the two endpoints in the pipeline system.
99.5% of tap water in Spain is considered safe for consumption and meets all quality standards set by the European Union. Instead of this statement the water quality varies across the country, and in some areas, tap water may not be safe to drink and could even cause illness due to the bad water pipe system.
What about the compounds, drug residues, hormones that have been left out of regulation and testing?
In recent years, more and more scientific research has leaked out, confirming the presence of at least 400 types of compounds in our tap water that are seriously harmful to health. There is another open secret that during your water treatment process can be produced toxic by-products as the commonly used organic chlorine (water disinfection) can be harmful to our health due to the degradation product of inorganic chloramines. So our concern is not unfounded, especially since these compounds have been proven to be caused neurological, cardiovascular, and other diseases.
And what happens to the water in the pipe?
Water flowing through old pipes can sometimes carry unwanted contaminants like rust or dirt due to the gradual decay of the pipes themselves. This is a concern, especially in areas where the water pipe infrastructure is old and not regularly replaced including outdated plumbing in older homes.
Are You Drinking Contaminated Water from Old Pipes?
Old pipes in your home or city infrastructure may be leaching dangerous contaminants into your drinking water, from lead to bacteria. Over time, metal pipes corrode, affecting the water’s taste and safety. Even plastic pipes can pose hidden risks, with chemicals leaching into your tap water.
Discover the quality of tap water in your home
Authorized information on water quality is regularly provided by the state organization SINAC and local service providers. If you are interested in the real quality of your tap water, take a water sample and have it tested at an accredited local water testing laboratory.
If you are lucky, you will get the right result, but even in this case, you should think about whether the officially accepted reference value of for example PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances sometimes referred to as “forever chemicals”) is reassuring for you.
